Buying a new car after passing your test is a milestone event in a young person’s life. The cost of buying and running a car however can sometimes put a dampener on things. While there are lots of options at your feet when you’re a young driver looking to purchase a car, it can get a bit confusing.

Naturally, the first decision when you’re buying your first car comes down to whether or not you’re going to buy used or new. Today we’re going to focus on the new cars but check out our blog if you’re considering going down the second-hand route.

When you buy a new car, you will get a warranty and you also reduce the chances of mechanical problems down the line. Newer cars in general tend to be less problematic then used cars however they also tend to be pricier.

It’s important to remember that after you pay for your car initially, the costs don’t stop there. You must consider the price you will eventually have to pay for car insurance. Young drivers insurance can be pricey, this is due to the fact that insurance is calculated on risk. Young drivers have less experience on the roads and hence the risk of a claim is higher.

We’ve been looking at the predicted trends for young driver cars in 2023 and we think we can give you some advice for purchasing a vehicle this year.

What to look for in a car as a young driver?

If you’re a young driver who doesn’t tend to clock up serious motorway mileage then we would suggest opting for a petrol car over a diesel one. It’s often better to go for a petrol model as a young driver especially if it has a stop-start option as a standard or an extra. This will help you to achieve better fuel consumption. While the experience of an engine cutting out when you’re in neutral might be off-putting, it will be great experience for you as a driver. Once you can handle that, you can handle most things on the road.

Do proper research, ensure that you are going to see cars in person and that you’re asking the salesperson questions. As a young driver it’s a good idea to go for a car that has power steering, good visibility, and responsive brakes. If you aren’t too familiar with these elements of a car then bring someone along to the dealership who is.

We know that running costs can be tough when you’re a young driver who’s starting out on the road, that’s why it’s vital to do all that you can to keep fuel and maintenance costs low, especially if you’re buying a brand-new car.

So without further adieu, here are 3 cars that could be a great fit for you this year.

The Volkswagen Up!

The Up is Volkswagen's smallest car. However while it might be small it’s a force to be reckoned with. Volkswagen has taken the creation of this car very seriously and remarkably they argue that this will eventually sell more models than the Volkswagen Golf! The only engine the Volkswagen Up offers is a 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine. This produces 64bhp promising an economy of up to 55.4mpg. Service intervals of the Volkswagen Up stand at 10,000 miles. What does this mean for a young driver? It means that the car insurance premium is likely to be far more favourable than most cars on the market due to the engine size and hp.

The compact dimensions of the Up make it a great drive especially if you have less experience on the road. While parking might induce anxiety when you’re a novice driver, the Volkswagen Up is likely to be parked both quickly and easily.

If you’re considering investing in a Volkswagen Up, then why not try and locate your local Volkswagen dealer here?

The Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto is a sporty looking car which gives it a youthful feel however, despite appearances it is a very sensible choice of car. The Picanto offers a hybrid of reliability, practicality, and good build quality. It is only available with five doors but you do get a choice of engine sizes. The Kia Picanto comes in a 1.0 litre engine and a 1.2 litre round cylinder petrol engine.

Thanks to the impressive mechanical refinement of the Kia Picanto, as a young driver you’re better to opt for the small engine as there isn’t any trade-off between that and the larger engine size. However, there is likely to be a trade-off with the cost of insurance for these two models, once again favouring the smaller engine.

The interior of the car boasts a healthy amount of equipment. You will avail of two electric front windows, USB ports, auto lights and most importantly, a hill start assist. Additional soundproofing and tweaked engine mounts make the Kia Picanto very refined.

If you are considering investing in a Kia Picanto why not try and find your local stockist here?

Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is one of the best selling cars in the UK. Naturally due to Ford’s commitment to safety it’s one of the best cars to invest in as a young driver. Not only is the Ford Fiesta easy to drive but it scores incredibly well in the safety raft. This includes a very clever feature called the MyKey system which allows parents to restrict the maximum speed of the car. While this might sound like a nuisance at first, it could prove very important for lowering your car insurance premium.

The Ford Fiesta offers sync voice activation and also the Ford titanium models have a swanky air conditioning system.

The Ford Fiesta offers a 1.0 litre engine with 99bhp for some models. This engine size is a good choice for learner drivers. While young drivers might want to hit the ground running with a high-powered machine, this could reap havoc when it comes time to pay the insurance bill.

The Ford fiesta is a larger looking car than the previous options mentioned, so if you aren’t afraid of parking and you want more space, this could be a serious contender.
